I was reminded tonight that perhaps the reason for discouraging the rampant use of the first-person singular nominative case personal pronoun is because it can create habit out of completely disregarding the fact that the second-person singular nominative case personal pronoun is someone else’s first-person and that if we all continually speak from the position of I, then it becomes increasingly difficult to collapse those spaces between your I and my I, so that my you and your me are relatable in ways that we can understand—relatable in instances that affect our us. Because if it weren’t foryou, I would be nothing.

I can’t remember where I heard it first or if I read it somewhere once or if it’s just one of those pieces of information that people just sort of know and continue to share with one another with very little concern as to where it originated or if it bears any relevance or significance outside of simply being “known” but in any case, at some point in my life, I was conditioned to believe that it is improper or wrong or taboo or frowned upon or unprofessional or unsophisticated or amateur or whatever the fuck else to begin any piece of writing with the first-person singular nominative case personal pronoun as if we are all simply encountering the frighteningly wondrous and paralyzingly complex nature of existence through eyes other than our own.
